Detroit Rolls Out Gen 6 DD13, DD15, DD16 Engines to Meet EPA 2027 Standards

Detroit has unveiled Gen 6 DD13, DD15 and DD16 heavy-duty engines with pre-SCR emissions systems, redesigned fuel delivery and Miller camshaft timing to meet EPA’s 2027 nitrogen oxide limits while boosting torque up to 1,900 lb-ft. Production of DD13 and DD15 begins January 2027, with DD16 following in January 2028.

1. Gen 6 Engine Introduction

Detroit has introduced its Gen 6 DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines for Freightliner and Western Star trucks, engineered to comply with the EPA’s 2027 nitrogen oxide emissions standards. This launch marks the sixth generation of the DD engine family, which debuted in 2007 and has evolved through increasingly stringent regulations.

2. Advanced Emissions and Fuel Systems

The Gen 6 portfolio features a pre-Selective Catalytic Reduction system mounted upstream of the primary aftertreatment, a thermal control valve for rapid warm-up, a redesigned fuel system with asymmetric intake ports and new injectors, and Miller timing on the camshaft. These upgrades collectively improve air-fuel mixing, reduce SCR regeneration cycles, and enable torque outputs up to 1,900 lb-ft.

3. Production Timeline and Strategic Implications

Production of Gen 6 DD13 and DD15 engines will commence in January 2027, with DD16 units following in January 2028. By aligning its product rollout with EPA deadlines, Detroit is positioned to capture increased OEM demand and reinforce its market share in the heavy-duty diesel segment.
