DOE Awards Multi-Million-Dollar Grant to Core Natural Resources for Rare Earth Pilot
CNR•Core Natural Resources subsidiary CONSOL Innovations LLC was selected for a multi-million-dollar DOE grant to develop a pilot facility extracting rare earth elements and critical materials from coal waste tailings in Pennsylvania. Pending approval, the project could create revenue streams and boost Core's role in domestic critical mineral supply.
1. DOE Grant Selection
Consol Innovations LLC, a subsidiary of Core Natural Resources, has been chosen for a multi-million-dollar grant from the Department of Energy's Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation. The award, contingent on completion of negotiation, falls under the Mines & Metals Capacity Expansion funding opportunity aimed at piloting byproduct mineral recovery at domestic industrial sites.
2. Pilot Facility Plans
Core plans to use the funding to construct a pilot-scale extraction plant in Pennsylvania that will recover rare earth elements and other critical materials from coal waste tailings at its mining complex. The facility is designed to test scalable processes that could be applied across the company’s broader coal operations.
3. Strategic Implications
If successful, the pilot could unlock new revenue streams and solidify Core's position in the U.S. critical minerals supply chain. This initiative complements the company’s existing innovations portfolio, including aerospace composites manufacturing and ventures to produce battery-grade graphite.
