The dollar and other major currencies held steady ahead of US midterm elections, while bitcoin and ether nursed losses after a $6.3 billion heist at Binance. Customers withdrew $3.64 billion from the exchange, which said it had covered 95% of the stolen assets.
The dollar and other major currencies were little changed on Monday as investors looked to Tuesday’s US midterm elections and a busy week of economic data and central bank decisions. Democrats were widely predicted to win the House of Representatives, while control of the Senate was more uncertain.
The dollar stood at 101.94 against a basket of currencies. The euro was near a 17-month low at $1.1159 after Fitch revised France’s outlook to negative from stable; sterling was little changed at $1.3387. The Australian dollar was flat at $0.7033 ahead of a rate decision, while the yen eased to 157.78 per dollar.
Bitcoin was up 0.22% at $77,975.62 and ether gained 0.27% to $2,268.42, after both fell to multi-week lows last week. Binance customers withdrew $3.64 billion, or 2.1% of its assets, after the exchange came back online on Sunday. Binance said withdrawals were stabilising, deposits remained substantial and it had covered 95% of the $6.3 billion in stolen assets.
