1. Dollar weakens
The dollar fell to a one-month low on Wednesday after Democrats captured majorities in the Senate and House, prompting concern that tougher AI regulation could weigh on US economic growth. The dollar index dropped 0.6% to 101.27, the euro rose 0.6% to $1.1258, and the yen gained nearly 0.8% to 157.92 per dollar. The 10-year Treasury yield fell nearly 5 basis points to 4.915% as investors sought bonds and scaled back bets on rate hikes next year.
2. Investors weigh outlook
A currency strategist at OCBC said the market moves reflected concerns about greater scrutiny of AI and its potential effect on US growth, while noting that federal legislation faces a high hurdle under President Donald Trump, who holds veto power. A Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist said attention would return to economic fundamentals after the elections and that strong US data could support further rate hikes and the dollar. Oil edged down to $102.90 a barrel.
