Dollar Tree, Dollar General and Family Dollar each recorded 4–6 percentage point household penetration gains, lifting overall dollar store reach to 42%. This marks the first time dollar stores have overtaken warehouse clubs as the third-most-visited retail channel in the U.S.

2. Consumer Financial Strain

A December survey found 57.4% of households would struggle to cover a $400 emergency expense and 27.5% reported cutting or skipping meals for budget reasons. These pressures have driven shoppers toward value formats and increased reliance on discount channels.

3. Coupon and Loyalty Trends

The share of U.S. shoppers redeeming loyalty coupons most or all of the time climbed to 47%, up 2.5 points from August. Perceived food-at-home inflation reached 19.6%, nearly eight times the official 2.4% rate, prompting deeper deal-seeking behaviors.
