1. About 1,100 jobs affected
CEO Jamie Iannone told staff in a memo that eBay would eliminate about 9% of its workforce as it simplifies operations and shifts resources to its fastest-growing areas. The cuts amount to around 1,100 jobs, based on the 12,300 employees eBay had at the end of last year. A spokesperson confirmed the layoffs, and Iannone said affected staff would be informed in the coming days.
2. Recent business context
eBay cut about 800 jobs, or 6% of its workforce, in February as part of efforts to streamline operations. The company has pushed into authenticated luxury goods, collectibles and refurbished products, and completed a $1.4 billion deal for fashion resale platform Depop. It forecast third-quarter revenue above analysts’ estimates in August and is scheduled to report its latest earnings next week.
