EchoStar's satellite internet unit Hughes files for bankruptcy

In its report for the quarter ended March 31, which was filed in May, Hughes Satellite said that it had $1.5 billion of debt maturing in August.

"We currently do not have the necessary cash on hand, projected future cash flows or committed financing to fund our obligations over the next twelve months, which raises substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern," the unit said in its May regulatory filing.

Aug. 3 (Reuters) - Hughes Satellite Systems, a unit of telecommunications company EchoStar, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday, after earlier raising concerns about its ability to continue operating and meet its debt obligations.

The unit, a satellite internet provider, listed both estimated assets and liabilities in the range of $1 billion to $10 billion in its petition filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

In June, another EchoStar subsidiary, Dish DBS, filed for bankruptcy while seeking court approval for a prepackaged restructuring plan, addressing impending debt maturities.
