Embraer Weighs Narrow-Body Jet Entry After A320, 737 Delivery Delays
EMBJ•Embraer plans to challenge Airbus and Boeing with a new narrow-body jet after carriers reported delivery backlogs of nearly a decade for A320 and 737 models. Its regional E2 jets have seen strong sales, and engineering teams are fast-tracking technologies for a larger airliner.
1. Marketing Display in Rio
Embraer projected its logo and images of its regional jets onto the 100-foot Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, a stunt that underscored confidence following strong E2 sales. The light show was blessed by a local priest and aimed to celebrate the company’s aviation heritage.
2. Consideration of Narrow-Body Segment
Embraer is reviewing plans to enter the 150–200-seat narrow-body market long dominated by Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 models, which currently face delivery waits approaching ten years. Carrier executives have urged the planemaker to commit to building a new aircraft to fill persistent slot shortages.
3. Engineering and Competitive Challenges
Engineering teams are accelerating development of technologies for a larger jet to compete with the A320 and 737 family, leveraging lessons from the E2 platform. Although Embraer has never produced a full-size airliner, the E2 is already 12 feet longer than the A320 and serves as a technical foundation.
