Equinor Launches 16-Week EIA for 500 MMboe Wisting Field with FPSO
EQNR•Equinor and partners submitted a Wisting oil field environmental impact assessment to Norwegian authorities, opening a 16-week public consultation while the project remains in concept maturation. The partnership holds 500 million barrels of oil equivalent, selected an FPSO concept and targets concept selection by end-2026 with a late-2027 FID.
1. EIA Submission and Public Consultation
Equinor and partners filed the environmental impact assessment program for the Wisting oil field to Norwegian regulators, initiating a 16-week public consultation phase while the Barents Sea project remains in its concept maturation stage.
2. Technical Concept and Emissions Strategy
The consortium abandoned shore power due to technical challenges and high costs, selecting an energy-efficient gas turbine for offshore power and an FPSO vessel as the preferred development concept, with potential CCS integration dependent on technological readiness and regulatory approval.
3. Timeline to FID
Partners aim to finalize concept selection by end-2026 and reach a final investment decision in late-2027, contingent on further technical and economic improvements to confirm commercial viability.
4. Resource Potential and Economic Impact
Discovered in 2013, Wisting holds just under 500 million barrels of oil equivalent, with an expected 30 years of operations driving long-term employment and value creation in Norway, and major Norwegian suppliers set to support engineering and construction.
