META•At Cannes, OpenAI’s head of ads and ex-Meta VP David Dugan said 20% of ChatGPT queries carry commercial intent across travel, retail, health, beauty and finance. OpenAI plans $100B ad revenue by 2030—half of Meta’s ad revenue—despite criticism of its targeting and measurement tools.
At the Cannes Lions festival, David Dugan—OpenAI’s head of ads and former Meta vice president—introduced ChatGPT ad placements to global marketers, marking OpenAI’s first major effort to integrate advertising into its conversational AI platform.
OpenAI disclosed that roughly 20% of ChatGPT interactions exhibit direct commercial intent, with the strongest engagement seen in travel, retail, health, beauty and financial services sectors, reflecting early advertiser interest.
The company is pursuing $100 billion in ad revenue by 2030—about half of Meta’s current ad business—and is preparing for a potential $1 trillion valuation IPO, though industry executives question its present targeting precision and measurement capabilities.
