Experimental Lilly combination drug tops Zepbound in weight-loss trial
LLY•Eli Lilly said its experimental EloraTZP combination produced average weight loss of 23.3% over 48 weeks among patients with diabetes, compared with 14.8% for Zepbound. Discontinuation rates for EloraTZP ranged from 10.8% to 27%, versus 2.9% for Zepbound.
1. Trial results
EloraTZP combines tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Zepbound, with experimental drug eloralintide. In a mid-stage trial of 367 adults with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes, the highest tested dose of the combination reduced average body weight by 23.3% over 48 weeks, compared with 14.8% for the highest Zepbound dose.
2. Tolerability and next steps
Patients stopped taking EloraTZP at rates ranging from 10.8% to 27%, depending on side-effect severity, compared with 2.9% for tirzepatide alone. The most common side effects were mild to moderate gastrointestinal issues, which were more frequent with the combination. Lilly said it plans to begin late-stage EloraTZP trials in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will adjust dose-escalation schedules.
