Explosions were heard Saturday evening in several areas in southern Iran, including Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state television reported. State television suggested they might be linked to Iranian military activity, but said officials had not confirmed missile strikes. Tasnim news agency cited a source saying the explosions on Qeshm Island were not related to missile strikes.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Navy said early Sunday that two oil tankers caught fire after hitting mines while attempting to pass through an “unauthorized route” in the strait. It was not immediately clear whether those incidents were linked to the explosions. Tasnim had earlier reported that two missiles struck Qeshm Island, with no official information on possible damage.
The explosions were reported days after US strikes on the island; a US official described those strikes as limited and not a resumption of major combat operations. The US military said Saturday evening that its forces disabled a commercial vessel that tried to pass through the US blockade of Iran.
