Exxon veteran Liam Mallon joins TMC board ahead of seabed mining push
TMC•The Metals Company appointed former ExxonMobil upstream chief Liam Mallon to its board as it advances plans for commercial recovery of polymetallic nodules in international waters. Mallon will chair its Sustainability and Innovation Committee; board member Brendan May will step down.

The Metals Company said it appointed Liam Mallon, who retired last year after a 35-year career at Exxon, to its board. He will also chair the company's Sustainability and Innovation Committee, while board member Brendan May will step down after two years.
2. Mining plans
TMC is advancing plans to begin commercial recovery of polymetallic nodules in international waters under a U.S. seabed mining framework. In 2025, the company asked the Trump administration to approve its plans, becoming the first company to seek U.S. government permission to operate outside U.S. territorial waters. The administration has signaled it is nearing approval for permits.
