FCC votes to ban all Chinese labs from testing US electronics
XLK•The FCC voted to bar Chinese labs from testing electronic devices for use in the US, with the prohibitions set to take effect in December 2028. FCC Chair Brendan Carr said 82% of electronics were tested in China in 2025.
1. Testing ban approved
The Federal Communications Commission voted to bar labs and certification bodies in countries including China that deny reciprocal treatment to US-based test labs from testing electronic devices for use in the US. The prohibitions are slated to take effect in December 2028.
2. Security concerns cited
Carr said 82% of electronics were tested in China in 2025, while about 4% were tested in US labs. He said foreign labs could access sensitive product information before devices enter the market and could allow insecure equipment into the US, disrupt communications networks or steal intellectual property.
3. Earlier restrictions
In 2025, the FCC barred testing by labs owned or controlled by the Chinese government. The agency also streamlined approvals for devices tested in US labs or labs from countries it said did not pose national security risks.
