Upon assuming the role, Ray will join the FedEx Executive Committee, succeeding John Smith, who will become CEO of FedEx Freight on June 1.

The surface operations leadership team will report directly to Ray, with no plans to refill his outgoing position as president of Surface Operations.

Prior to that, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer for FedEx Ground.
