Fewer than 1 in 10 UK businesses are fully prepared for climate risks, Barclays finds
BCS•Barclays research found fewer than 10% of UK businesses consider themselves fully resilient to climate risks, while 25% are investing in resilience. Some 83% said underinvestment was constraining growth.
1. Business resilience gap
Barclays research found that 25% of UK businesses are investing in climate resilience, despite 85% viewing adaptation as critical to growth. Half redirected investment away from high-risk assets over five years, and 9% closed or downsized assets due to climate change.
2. Investment constraints
Almost 90% said adaptation investments met or exceeded expectations, and nearly half of resilience investors gained better insurance access or lower costs. Competing priorities, uncertain returns and data gaps constrain investment; 30% primarily use data, modeling and scenario analysis to assess physical climate risk.
