Firefly Aerospace Acquires Space-ng to Integrate AI Vision Navigation After Moon Landing Success
FLY•Firefly Aerospace has acquired Space-ng, securing its AI-powered vision navigation software and high-resolution spacecraft cameras proven during Blue Ghost Mission 1’s lunar touchdown. Space-ng’s autonomous guidance systems will integrate across Firefly’s lunar landers and orbital vehicles to support upcoming NASA and Defense Innovation Unit missions.
1. Acquisition Details
Firefly Aerospace has completed the acquisition of Space-ng Inc., bringing onboard its AI-powered vision navigation software and high-resolution spacecraft cameras. Firefly plans to integrate Space-ng’s autonomous guidance systems into its Blue Ghost landers and Elytra orbital vehicles to enhance onboard navigation and hazard avoidance without relying on GPS or GNSS.
2. Proven Mission Performance
Space-ng’s navigation suite demonstrated its capabilities during Blue Ghost Mission 1 by autonomously detecting hazardous lunar terrain, executing two real-time hazard avoidance maneuvers, and achieving a precise touchdown within Mare Crisium. This real-world validation underscores the technology’s role in enabling safe, repeatable lunar operations.
3. Strategic Integration and Mission Pipeline
Firefly will deploy Space-ng’s software and compute hardware across its fleet to support three additional NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services missions, the NASA MoonFall project, and a space domain awareness mission for the Defense Innovation Unit. The acquisition also appoints Space-ng co-founder Ethan Rublee as Chief Engineer of Software to oversee integration and future development.
