Fiserv small business index shows September sales up 2.2% year over year on back-to-school boost
FISV•Fiserv’s September 2026 Small Business Index showed sales up 2.2% year over year and 0.7% month over month. Average tickets rose 4.2%, while transactions fell 2% year over year.
1. Sales and transactions
Retail sales increased 3% year over year, supported by back-to-school demand, while retail transactions rose 2.4%. Food services sales declined 1% as transactions fell 3.9%, and gas station sales jumped 21.1%; inflation-adjusted gas station sales fell 5%.
