Florida asks court to force Meta to change Facebook, Instagram for teens
META•Florida asked a judge to order Meta to remove users under 14 from Facebook and Instagram, limit teens to two hours daily across its apps and disable features including autoplay and infinite scroll while a lawsuit proceeds.
1. Florida seeks injunction
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a Pasco County judge for a temporary injunction requiring Meta to make changes to Facebook and Instagram while the state’s lawsuit proceeds. The filing also seeks to cut off teens’ messaging after their time limits and bar advertisements to them.
2. Meta disputes request
Meta said Florida should focus on other platforms and called the requested injunction meritless. Florida’s lawsuit accuses Meta of knowingly designing platforms to be addictive for young users and misleading consumers about safety.
3. Other states settled
In August, Meta reached settlements with 48 other states and Washington, D.C., agreeing to pay up to $18 billion and make changes for teen users. Florida opted out; its filing says the settlement’s terms are insufficient, and argues Meta’s commitments show that the changes Florida seeks are possible.
