Focus Asset Management warns rising yields expose fragility beneath stock market gains
TLT•Focus Asset Management warned that rising Treasury yields and narrow equity leadership masked market fragility. The 10-year yield topped 5.3% in September, while five technology companies accounted for roughly 93% of S&P 500 gains since late July.
1. Yields and market gains
Focus Asset Management’s Q3 2026 analysis, published October 14, warned that rising yields and concentrated equity gains masked broader market fragility. The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield exceeded 5.3% in September, its highest level since 2007, raising borrowing costs and pressure on equity valuations.
2. Narrow market leadership
The S&P 500 gained 2.38% in the quarter, while the S&P/TSX Composite rose approximately 1.62%. Five technology companies accounted for roughly 93% of S&P 500 gains since late July.
3. September declines
Nearly 80% of S&P 500 stocks declined in September, and more than 40% of constituents were over 20% below their 52-week highs.
