Former Senator Sam Nunn Reviews Progress on HII’s DDG 133 Destroyer
HII’s Ingalls division hosted former Senator Sam Nunn for a construction tour of USS Sam Nunn (DDG 133), the fifth Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. Flight III vessels feature AN/SPY 6(V)1 radar and Aegis Baseline 10, and Ingalls has delivered 36 Arleigh Burkes with five more Flight IIIs under construction.
1. Visit Highlights Construction Progress
Former Senator Sam Nunn, alongside his wife and daughter Michelle Nunn, toured Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula to inspect the USS Sam Nunn (DDG 133) construction. The visit revisited milestones since the keel authentication ceremony and underscored the shipbuilders’ pride in carrying forward Senator Nunn’s defense legacy.
2. Advanced Flight III Upgrades
The future USS Sam Nunn is the fifth Flight III Arleigh Burke-class destroyer at Ingalls and incorporates AN/SPY 6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and the Aegis Baseline 10 Combat System. These upgrades significantly enhance integrated air and missile defense capabilities against evolving threats.
3. Production and Backlog Status
Ingalls has delivered 36 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers to date, including two Flight III variants, and currently has five Flight III ships under construction through DDG 146. Early planning and material procurement are underway for additional ships up to DDG 146, sustaining HII’s multi-year shipbuilding backlog.
