Freshworks Finds Mid-Market AI Complexity Wastes 25% Budgets, $16.29B Annually
FRSH•Freshworks research finds mid-market companies lose 25% of AI budgets to complexity, wasting an estimated $16.29 billion annually in the US. The study reports 86% of IT leaders face increased AI workloads and only 15% have integrated AI into core operations.
1. AI Complexity Tax Impact
Freshworks research quantifies a 25% average loss of mid-market AI budgets to complexity overhead, representing an annual $16.29 billion waste in the US. This “complexity tax” disproportionately affects companies with tighter margins, eroding resources before delivering business value.
2. Workload Increase and Integration Rates
The study finds 86% of mid-market IT leaders report higher workloads managing AI complexity, while 80% encounter errors and rework from flawed outputs. Despite growing investment plans, just 15% have integrated AI into core operations and 36% remain stuck in pilot phases.
3. Deployment Timelines vs ROI Expectations
Mid-market executives expect ROI within eight months, yet 55% say deployment alone takes six to 12 months before value emerges. Key barriers include system integration complexity (27%), talent shortages (26%) and excessive configuration requirements (26%), risking program cuts before ROI.
4. Shift to Out-of-the-Box AI Solutions
In response, 89% of mid-market firms plan to boost AI spending, prioritizing solutions that deliver early value and plug into existing systems. Workflow integration ranks as the top priority for 34%, with 90% favoring built-in workflows and 54% opting to buy rather than build AI capabilities.
