GE HealthCare Adds $35M to BARDA Contract for AI Ultrasound
GE HealthCare secured a $35 million expansion to its BARDA cost-sharing contract to accelerate AI-enabled ultrasound and next-generation imaging platforms for trauma assessment and mass-casualty readiness. Building on an October 2023 collaboration, the funding supports development of portable point-of-care systems for emergency and field-based care.
1. Expansion of BARDA Collaboration
On February 18, GE HealthCare announced a $35 million expansion of its existing BARDA cost-sharing agreement, with BARDA providing the majority of the funding. This builds on the initial October 2023 partnership and aims to fast-track development of advanced medical imaging solutions.
2. Focus on AI-Enabled Ultrasound and Next-Gen Platforms
The additional resources will be directed toward AI-enabled ultrasound technologies and next-generation imaging systems designed for rapid trauma assessment and large-scale casualty events. Emphasis will be on diagnostic speed, accuracy and user-friendly interfaces suitable for frontline and transport settings.
3. Strategic and Market Implications
By strengthening its point-of-care pipeline, GE HealthCare is poised to reinforce leadership in AI-driven medical imaging and emergency preparedness. Successful development and adoption of these portable systems could drive long-term revenue growth and expand the company’s role in trauma and field-based healthcare solutions.
