Silicon Labs SoC Powers 500,000 Wi-SUN Module Shipment for India Grid
Silicon Labs’ EFR32FG28 SoC powered the shipment of 500,000 Wi-SUN modules by Comminent for India’s RDSS smart meter rollout under the new IS 18010 standard. Modules offer dual-band Sub-GHz and 2.4 GHz Bluetooth LE connectivity, multi-core ARM processing and Secure Vault PSA Level 3 security for large-scale AMI networks.
1. Record Shipment Milestone
Comminent shipped over 500,000 Wi-SUN-compliant communication modules powered by the EFR32FG28 SoC. The delivery supports one of India’s largest smart grid deployments and marks the highest-volume commercial rollout of Wi-SUN technology in the region.
2. EFR32FG28 SoC Technology
The dual-band module combines a long-range Sub-GHz radio optimized for India’s RF environment with a 2.4 GHz Bluetooth LE radio and multi-core ARM architecture. Secure Vault™ technology with PSA Level 3 certification provides hardware-based cryptographic acceleration and anti-tamper protection for advanced metering infrastructure networks.
3. India’s Smart Grid Standards
Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, India’s Bureau of Indian Standards adopted the IEEE 2857-2021 and ISO/IEC/IEEE 32857:2026 Wi-SUN FAN specification as national standard IS 18010. This standardization enables interoperable, self-healing mesh networks across millions of smart meters.
4. Expansion and Market Impact
Success in India positions Silicon Labs for module deployments in the United States, Japan and emerging energy-transition regions. The scalable, secure Wi-SUN platform addresses growing utility demand for resilient grid monitoring and IoT connectivity.
