GE Vernova and Hitachi Sign MoU for 300-MWe SMR Deployment in Southeast Asia
GE Vernova and Hitachi signed a memorandum of understanding to deploy 300-MWe BWRX-300 small modular reactors across Southeast Asia, collaborating through joint ventures to secure qualified Japanese suppliers and commercial sites. Several countries, including Bulgaria and Estonia, have also expressed interest in the water-cooled SMR technology.
1. MoU for SMR Deployment in Southeast Asia
On March 14 in Tokyo, GE Vernova and Hitachi entered into a memorandum of understanding to explore deployment of their 300-MWe, water-cooled BWRX-300 small modular reactor across Southeast Asian markets. The agreement was signed during the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Ministerial & Business Forum to identify commercial sites and outline collaboration frameworks.
2. Joint Venture Collaboration and Supply Chain
The companies will collaborate through GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Hitachi GE Vernova Nuclear Energy joint ventures to evaluate commercial opportunities and integrate qualified Japanese suppliers. This approach aims to bolster the SMR supply chain and support future deployments by leveraging regional manufacturing capabilities and expertise.
3. Global BWRX-300 Development Pipeline
The first BWRX-300 unit is under construction at Ontario Power Generation’s Darlington site, with completion expected by the end of the decade and four units planned overall. Additional deployment interest has emerged in Bulgaria and Estonia, while the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is reviewing an application for a BWRX-300 at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Clinch River site.
