Germany approves fuel tax discount
EWG•Germany approved a fuel tax discount that will cost federal and state governments €2.5 billion ($2.85 billion). Taxes on gasoline and diesel will be cut by €0.17 ($0.20) per litre from October through December.
1. Discount approved
Germany’s lower house of parliament approved the law, and the upper house raised no objections, allowing it to be implemented. The tax cut will apply to gasoline and diesel from October until the end of December.
2. Earlier relief measures
The government says the discount is intended to help citizens deal with fuel prices that have soared because of the Iran war. Germany previously had a fuel tax discount in May and June that cost €1.6 billion and temporarily eased inflation.
