GlobalFoundries Acquires Synopsys ARC IP, Expands into $25B Optics Market
GFS•GlobalFoundries completed acquisition of Synopsys' ARC IP business, combining it with MIPS to offer a RISC-V and ARC processor suite with a 300-customer ecosystem for automotive and edge AI platforms. It partnered with Sivers to integrate laser arrays into its silicon photonics platform targeting a $25 billion pluggable optics market.
1. Completion of ARC Processor IP Acquisition
GlobalFoundries has assumed ownership of Synopsys' ARC Processor IP Solutions business, merging it into its MIPS unit. The acquired portfolio includes ARC cores, ASIP Designer and ASIP Programmer tools and adds to a combined suite backed by over 150 patents and a global ecosystem of 300 IP customers.
2. Expanded Software-to-Silicon Physical AI Offering
By integrating MIPS and ARC processor IP, GlobalFoundries now offers end-to-end RISC-V and ARC cores, custom design tools and advanced manufacturing scale. Automotive, industrial robotics and edge AI customers gain optimized compute solutions spanning high-performance, mid-range and ultra-low-power applications with early design engagement.
3. Strategic Photonics Partnership with Sivers
GlobalFoundries partnered with Sivers to integrate its laser arrays into GF's silicon photonics platform. This collaboration supports GF's SCALE optical engine solutions and positions the company to address a projected $25 billion pluggable optics market.
