GlobalFoundries Files U.S. ITC and Texas Suits Over 11 Patents

GFSGFS

GlobalFoundries sued Tower Semiconductor in the U.S. ITC and Texas federal court, alleging infringement of 11 U.S. patents on high-performance process technologies and seeking injunctions to block import and sales plus damages. GF cited its 8,000-patent portfolio and a $16 billion U.S. fab investment plan in its IP defense.

1. Lawsuit Filings

GlobalFoundries filed multiple complaints today in the U.S. International Trade Commission and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas against Tower Semiconductor. The filings seek injunctive relief to block import and sale of allegedly infringing semiconductors and monetary damages for lost profits.

2. Alleged Patent Infringement

The complaints accuse Tower Semiconductor of unlicensed use of 11 U.S. patents protecting high-performance process technologies critical to smart mobile, automotive, aerospace and communications chips. GF contends that Tower’s exploitation of these patents undermines decades of its R&D investment.

3. R&D Investments and IP Portfolio

GlobalFoundries highlighted over a decade of domestic manufacturing investments, including a $16 billion U.S. fab expansion commitment with $3 billion dedicated to emerging technology R&D. GF’s intellectual property portfolio now exceeds 8,000 patents versus fewer than 500 held by Tower.

4. Market and Competitive Implications

If injunctions are granted, Tower’s ability to ship key chips into the U.S. market could be curtailed, altering supply dynamics in high-growth segments. Successful enforcement would bolster GF’s market position, affirm its pricing power and deter future IP disputes.
