Goodell says he welcomes inquiry into Hurts' medical treatment
PHI•NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he welcomes an NFL Players Association investigation into the medical care received by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, who was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Hurts is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
1. Investigation welcomed
Goodell said Wednesday that the league welcomes an investigation into the medical care Hurts received after being diagnosed with blood clots. The NFL Players Association called for a full investigation on Tuesday.
2. Hurts' condition
Hurts was diagnosed with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis before playing against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on October 11, then flew back to the United States with the team. His agent later announced that he had deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli; he is clinically stable and being treated with blood thinners.
3. League response
Questions have been raised about why Hurts was allowed to play and take a transatlantic flight after the initial diagnosis. Goodell defended the protocols followed and said he was most concerned about Hurts' health.
