Google Allocates 3.5GW TPUs to Anthropic and Backs 200MW Fusion Output
Google committed 3.5 gigawatts of its Broadcom-made Tensor Processing Units to power Anthropic’s production-scale AI workloads under a multiyear arrangement with CoreWeave. The company also agreed to purchase half of the 400-megawatt output from Commonwealth Fusion Systems’ planned Richmond, Virginia plant, due online by early 2027.
1. AI Chip Agreement Details
Google has entered a multiyear deal with CoreWeave to supply Anthropic with cloud computing capacity, specifically to run AI model workloads at production scale. The phased rollout includes options to expand capacity based on Anthropic’s future needs, though financial terms and total chip gigawatts were not disclosed.
2. Broadcom TPU Deployment
Under the arrangement, Google will dedicate 3.5 gigawatts of its Broadcom-made Tensor Processing Units within its cloud infrastructure to Anthropic’s AI services. This allocation underscores Google’s strategy to monetize its custom accelerator technology by renting capacity to leading AI developers.
3. Fusion Power Purchase
In a separate initiative, Google agreed to purchase half of the 400-megawatt electrical output from Commonwealth Fusion Systems’ tokamak-based fusion plant near Richmond, Virginia. The facility is slated to begin operations in late 2026 or early 2027, marking Google’s entry into long-term clean energy procurement.
