Google and Accel Choose 5 Startups, Reject 70% AI Wrappers in Atoms Cohort
Google and Accel’s Atoms accelerator reviewed more than 4,000 Indian AI applications and selected five startups reimagining AI workflows, rejecting 70% that simply layered chatbots on existing software. Selected companies receive up to $2 million in funding plus $350,000 in cloud credits to develop AI products for enterprise adoption.
1. Accelerator Application Review
The Atoms program received over 4,000 applications from Indian AI startups, roughly 70% of which were wrapper models layering chatbots onto existing software rather than innovating new AI workflows.
2. Cohort Selection and Support
Five startups demonstrating novel AI use cases were selected for the latest cohort and will each receive up to $2 million in funding from Accel and Google’s AI Futures Fund, plus $350,000 in Google Cloud credits.
3. Sector Focus and Trends
About 62% of applications targeted productivity tools and 13% focused on software development, with few submissions in healthcare and education, reflecting a strong enterprise-centric trend in India’s AI ecosystem.
4. Integration with Model Development
Startups are encouraged to combine multiple AI models and share real-world performance feedback with Google DeepMind teams, establishing a feedback flywheel to improve future model capabilities.
