Google, AWS and Microsoft Court Alberta Data Center Incentives at Stampede
Google, Amazon and Microsoft executives appeared at Calgary Stampede’s oil-industry gala to discuss Alberta’s new data centre incentives, including discounted power tariffs and fast-tracked permitting. The province aims to leverage its surplus natural gas generation to secure at least five hyperscale cloud campuses by 2028.
1. Big Tech at Calgary Stampede
Executives from Google, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft joined Alberta officials at the Calgary Stampede’s oil-sector gala to explore opportunities for expanding cloud infrastructure in the province’s energy hub. The festival setting enabled informal discussions with oil and gas leaders on co-locating data centres with existing energy facilities.
2. Alberta’s Data Centre Incentives
The provincial government unveiled a package of incentives including a 12% tax credit on eligible power expenditures, streamlined environmental and building approvals, and discounted transmission rates. These measures are designed to make Alberta one of North America’s most competitive regions for hyperscale cloud investments.
3. Investment Targets and Job Creation
Alberta aims to attract at least five new hyperscale data centres by 2028, representing an estimated C$5 billion in infrastructure investment and thousands of construction and operations jobs. Officials highlighted plans for additional natural gas generation capacity to ensure reliable, low-cost power for cloud campuses.
4. Implications for Cloud Providers
Cloud operators stand to benefit from lower operating expenses and faster project timelines, potentially accelerating Google’s expansion of its global data centre footprint. The move could reduce reliance on higher-cost markets and strengthen Alberta’s position in the competitive data-hosting landscape.
