Google Cloud Powers 200 AI Projects with HSBC; Waymo Recalls 3,871 Robotaxis
GOOG•HSBC has entered a multi-year deal with Google Cloud and DeepMind to launch over 200 AI use cases—each expected to yield more than $100m in revenue or efficiency gains—across its global banking operations. Waymo will recall 3,871 US robotaxis to fix a navigation software bug that could route vehicles into closed freeway construction zones.
1. HSBC signs multi-year AI agreement with Google
HSBC has entered a multi-year agreement with Google Cloud and DeepMind engineers to introduce agentic AI tools across its banking operations worldwide. The collaboration aims to deploy over 200 AI use cases—including generative models, regulatory frameworks, and agent platforms—over the next two years, with each project expected to deliver more than $100m in direct income or efficiency gains. HSBC will leverage Google’s infrastructure, which already hosts over 600 of its applications, and integrate AI-driven insights into wealth management, financial crime detection, and decision-support processes while retaining human judgment.
2. Waymo recalls 3,871 robotaxis over navigation bug
Waymo will recall 3,871 Fifth Generation Automated Driving System robotaxis in the US to fix a software issue that could lead vehicles into closed freeway construction zones at speed. The free over-the-air update will refine the navigation algorithms to detect and avoid restricted zones, bolstering safety. While Waymo’s revenue remains under 1% of Alphabet’s total, its valuation in the tens of billions underscores its strategic importance in the autonomous ride-hailing market.
