Google, Telstra Expand Infrastructure with 8,000km Aura Fibre and Pacific Subsea Cables
GOOG•Google will integrate Telstra’s Aura terrestrial fibre network—8,000km of a planned 14,000km linking Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney—to bolster capacity and resilience for growing AI workloads. Telstra gains access to Google’s Pacific Connect and Australia Connect subsea cables, including Tabua, Proa and Bulikula systems, to enhance regional connectivity.
1. Partnership Scope
Google and Telstra have announced an expanded alliance to jointly leverage each other’s terrestrial and subsea networks, aiming to improve network resilience, capacity and security in response to surging AI and cloud demand.
2. Terrestrial Fibre Network
Under the deal, Google will utilize Telstra’s Aura fibre build, which has reached 8,000km of the targeted 14,000km, connecting Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney to support data-heavy applications and reduce latency.
3. Subsea Cable Access
Telstra will tap into Google’s Pacific Connect and Australia Connect subsea initiatives, accessing fibre pairs on the Tabua (Australia–Fiji–Hawaii–California), Proa (Guam–Japan–Northern Marianas) and Bulikula (Fiji–French Polynesia–Guam–Northern Marianas–Hawaii) systems.
4. Strategic Importance
The collaboration underscores a shift of telecom operators toward digital infrastructure provisioning and deeper hyperscaler integration, marking telecom-cloud partnerships as critical battlegrounds for future connectivity and AI workloads.
