Google to Spend $75 Billion in 2025 After Cloud Demand Outpaces Capacity
MSFT•On earnings calls, Google said Cloud demand exceeded capacity, with Gemini API usage up 40x and Vertex AI up 20x year-to-date. It plans $75 billion in 2025 capex to expand infrastructure, after 2024 revenue grew 13.9% and net margin reached 28.6%.
1. Capacity Constraints in Cloud Division
During February and April earnings calls, management revealed that Cloud demand far exceeded available capacity, forcing Google to turn away paying customers. This constraint was underscored by a nearly 40-fold increase in calls to its Gemini API and a 20-fold jump in Vertex AI usage over a six-month period.
2. $75 Billion Capital Expenditure Plan
To alleviate the bottleneck, Google guided investors to expect approximately $75 billion in capital expenditures for 2025, earmarked for data center builds, networking upgrades and AI infrastructure expansion. This commitment aims to scale up service capacity to meet the surging demand from enterprise and AI customers.
3. Enhanced Financial Performance
Google’s revenue growth accelerated to 13.9% in 2024, driven largely by Cloud and AI services, while net margin climbed to a three-year peak of 28.6%. The stronger financial metrics provide bandwidth for the large-scale capex and signal confidence in sustained growth.
