Goolsbee reportedly says AI-induced inflation is 'jumping out of its lane'
TLT•Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee said AI investment may be fueling broader inflation through aggregate overheating. He said persistent inflation would make the Fed’s next steps clear, while progress on tariff- and oil-driven inflation could allow rate cuts to resume.
1. AI spending and inflation
Austan Goolsbee said inflation is starting to feel like “aggregate overheating,” with higher costs from AI data centers spreading to prices beyond data centers and directly adjacent industries. He warned that if investment-driven demand pushes growth above potential and inflation spreads into general services, it could be harder to reverse than supply shocks.
2. Fed policy outlook
Goolsbee said the Fed should act decisively if it sees overheating demand spreading into inflation expectations. If inflation remains persistent, he said, “it’s clear what the Fed has to do”; evidence that tariff- and oil-driven inflation is easing could support a return to rate cuts. Goolsbee does not have a vote on rate policy this year.
3. Rates and market expectations
The article said the Fed cut rates three times in 2025, then raised its short-term policy rate by a quarter percentage point last month to a range of 3.75%-4.00%. Rate futures markets expected no increase at the October 27-28 meeting and another quarter-point increase in December.
