Hawaii regulators clear Hawaiian Electric renewables, storage procurement plan for Oahu, Hawaii Island
HE•Bid targets and timing
The bid process targets about 1,650 GWh of variable renewables, 465 MW of grid-forming resources and 111 MW of firm generation.
Projects are slated to enter service in 2031-2034, with the aim of cutting oil-fired generation and lowering customer costs.
Regulators clear procurement plan
Hawaii regulators cleared Hawaiian Electric Industries’ integrated grid planning RFP to procure renewable generation, storage and firm capacity for Oahu and Hawaii Island.
Retirement of aging plants and future RFP
The plan also calls for faster retirement of aging plants through earlier additions of 24/7-capable firm generation.
A separate all-fuels RFP is planned by the end of 2026 to benchmark price, sourcing and environmental impact.
