Hawaiian Electric says Star-Advertiser corrects report it sought approval for 500-MW Oahu power plant
HEI•What the PUC ordered and JERA's proposal
The PUC instead ordered analyses to show whether up to 500 MW of new 24/7 firm capacity on Oahu is needed before expanding procurement.
Hawaiian Electric said JERA is pursuing a 500 MW plant proposal outside the competitive bidding process, via a sole-source arrangement backed by the State Energy Office.

The utility said it did not ask Hawaii’s Public Utilities Commission to approve construction of a 500 MW plant.
