Shares fall after preliminary second-quarter update
Shares of hospital operator HCA Healthcare HCA.N fell 7.8% to $368 premarket.
The company said more patients lost health insurance exchange coverage, increasing uninsured patient volumes in the second quarter.
HCA lowered its 2026 EPS forecast to $28.70-$30.50 from $29.10-$31.50 previously, and narrowed its full-year revenue forecast to $77.0 billion-$79.5 billion from $76.5 billion-$80.00 billion.
Preliminary second-quarter revenue rose to $20.23 billion from $18.61 billion a year earlier, above analysts' estimate of $19.43 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The company said it recognizes about $400 million of incremental benefit from Medicaid supplemental payment programs, primarily related to Florida.
Peer hospital operators Tenet Healthcare THC.N, Universal Health Services UHS.N and Community Health Systems CYH.N were all down about 2% premarket.
As of the last close, HCA was down about 16% year to date.
