HII Teams with Path Robotics to Target 15% Shipbuilding Throughput Increase

HIIHII

HII signed an MOU with Path Robotics to integrate Obsidian™ physical AI welding into its manned and unmanned shipbuilding operations. The partnership aims to boost HII’s shipbuilding throughput by an additional 15% in 2026 following a 14% increase in 2025.

1. Partnership Foundations

HII and Path Robotics signed a memorandum of understanding to explore integrating Obsidian™ physical AI welding into both manned and unmanned shipbuilding at HII’s facilities. The MOU was endorsed by HII’s executive vice president of maritime systems and Path Robotics’ CEO, aiming to accelerate production and strengthen the maritime industrial base.

2. Throughput and Automation Goals

HII reported a 14% increase in shipbuilding throughput in 2025 and is targeting an additional 15% gain in 2026 through the deployment of AI-driven autonomous welding solutions. The partnership will focus on augmenting HII’s skilled workforce, automating structural production, and meeting the U.S. Navy’s growing demand for advanced vessels.

3. Technology and IP Development

Joint research and development will address autonomous shipbuilding capability, workforce training for extended automation, and an intellectual property framework for AI-based welding systems. Integration efforts will extend to HII’s ROMULUS unmanned surface vehicles, combining physical AI models with existing shipyard technologies to adapt to real-world fabrication challenges.
