Honda and Sony Halt Afeela EV, Review 400 Staff and Repurpose AI Tech
Honda and Sony halted Afeela 1 EV development, cancelled its 2026 launch, and are reviewing roughly 400 JV staff after Honda’s electrification shift. The JV will overhaul its operating model and repurpose Afeela’s AI assistant, in-car audio and 40-sensor platform for mobility and entertainment services.
1. Project Cancellation and Staff Review
Honda and Sony have stopped development of the Afeela 1 EV after Honda revised its electrification roadmap. The planned 2026 launch was cancelled and the joint venture is assessing the future of roughly 400 employees, with some roles potentially shifted back to the parent companies.
2. Operating Model Restructure
The Sony-Honda Mobility venture is reworking its business plan and operating model to align with new strategic priorities. Functions deemed overstaffed, such as marketing, are under review, and the partners are weighing whether to integrate these activities into their own organizations.
3. Technology Repurposing and Future Plans
Assets from the cancelled Afeela 1— including a 40-sensor platform, AI assistant and in-car audio systems designed for PlayStation 5 integration—will be redirected into mobility and entertainment offerings. While a passenger EV may be reconsidered later, the JV will focus initially on software, AI and audio applications across Honda’s and Sony’s ecosystems.
