Honda develops wireless EV charging road technology for large commercial vehicles
HMC•Honda developed technology for roads that wirelessly charge moving EVs, with public-road demonstrations planned in Japan from fiscal 2027 and development targeting up to 150 kW for large trucks.
1. Charging while moving
Honda R&D developed core technology for a magnetic-coupling wireless power transfer road system for charging EVs while moving. Work with Taisei and Taisei Rotec targets passenger EVs and heavy commercial vehicles of up to about 20 tons gross weight.
2. Testing and output plans
The system distributes DC power and integrates an inverter and coil in each embedded road unit. Additional durability and safety testing is planned to start in late 2026, ahead of public-road demonstrations from Japan fiscal 2027; the development roadmap includes validation up to 150 kW for large trucks.
