Huntington Ingalls Completes Sea Trials for USS Zumwalt’s First Hypersonic CPS Integration

HIIHII

HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division completed builder’s sea trials for the upgraded USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000) following integration of the Navy’s first Conventional Prompt Strike hypersonic system, replacing twin 155mm gun systems with missile tubes. The Zumwalt arrived for modernization in August 2023 and was undocked after upgrades in December 2024.

1. HII Celebrates First Anniversary of NNS Charleston Operations

On Jan. 22, 2026, HII marked one year since acquiring the 480,000-sq.-ft. Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) Charleston facility on a 45-acre site in Goose Creek, S.C. Since closing the asset acquisition in January 2025, the site delivered its first modular unit within 40 days and surpassed its 2025 production targets by 15%, supporting both submarine and carrier construction. The plant’s barge and rail access, combined with proximity to a growing maritime-trade workforce, strengthens HII’s distributed shipbuilding initiative, which now encompasses 23 U.S. shipyards and multiple international fabricators. Investors should note that this expanded capacity directly underpins HII’s ability to meet accelerating U.S. Navy ship orders and could drive higher backlog conversion in the coming quarters.

2. Ingalls Completes Sea Trials on Hypersonic-Equipped USS Zumwalt

On Jan. 21, 2026, HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division successfully completed builder’s sea trials for USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), the Navy’s first warship modified to carry the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic weapon system. The destroyer arrived for modernization in August 2023, was moved ashore for integration of CPS tubes and removal of twin 155 mm guns, and was undocked in December 2024. Trials validated propulsion, combat-system interfaces and stealth signatures, clearing the path for operational testing later this year. Sister ships USS Michael Monsoor and USS Lyndon B. Johnson are in line for CPS integration, solidifying HII’s role in delivering next-generation strike platforms and enhancing its long-term defense-contract revenue visibility.
