Hurricane Polo hits northwest Mexico's Sonora state after drenching Baja California Sur
SPY•Hurricane Polo made landfall near Guaymas, Sonora, with maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph after hitting Baja California Sur as a Category 2 storm. Officials reported no deaths in Baja California Sur, while 543 people sheltered in Sonora and nearly 700 sought refuge in Baja California Sur.
1. Second landfall
Polo made a second landfall near the port city of Guaymas on Mexico's Pacific coast on Tuesday. State authorities ordered evacuations in southern municipalities, and officials said 543 people were sheltering as the storm arrived. The Category 1 hurricane had maximum sustained winds of around 75 mph and was expected to weaken rapidly inland.
2. Rain and damage
Polo earlier battered Baja California Sur as a Category 2 storm, flooding streets and snapping trees. The governor said no lives were lost there. The storm was expected to bring 4 to 6 inches of rain to parts of Sonora, with isolated totals of 8 inches; forecasters also warned its remnants could bring heavy rain across the U.S. Southwest and Plains.
3. Shelter and aid
Nearly 700 people sought refuge in Baja California Sur shelters and were expected to return home during the day, the head of Mexico's civil protection agency said. Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy said a ship delivered 2,000 food baskets, 8,000 liters of drinking water and machinery to the region.
