IBM Unveils z17, LinuxONE 5 Systems With 82 Cores, 18 TB Memory
IBM•IBM released compact z17 and LinuxONE 5 single-frame and rack-mount systems offering up to 82 cores (20% more) and 18 TB memory (12% boost), enabling co-location in data centers facing rental costs above $400 per kW/month. It launched infrastructure management and COBOL Elevate for z/OS modernization with post-quantum cryptography.
1. New Hardware Configurations
IBM introduced new z17 and LinuxONE 5 configurations in both single-frame and rack-mount formats. Each supports up to 82 cores—a 20% increase—and 18 TB of memory—a 12% boost—with single-processor throughput up to 10% higher than the prior z16 A02 based on workload.
2. Deployment Flexibility and Efficiency
The rack-mount options allow clients to co-locate IBM and third-party equipment in industry-standard racks, helping organizations reclaim data center space, improve energy efficiency and adapt to vacancy rates below 5% and rental costs above $400 per kW/month.
3. Software and Security Enhancements
IBM Infrastructure Management for Z and LinuxONE unifies provisioning, configuration and operations with Terraform-based Infrastructure-as-Code. COBOL Elevate for z/OS simplifies application modernization without rewrites, and all systems include standard post-quantum cryptography plus new Crypto Discovery & Inventory capabilities.
4. Availability
The new z17 single-frame and rack-mount systems and LinuxONE 5 offerings are available now. COBOL Elevate for z/OS will become available starting September 18.
