IMF chief says AI risks may exceed opportunities without safeguards and ethical framework
SPY•IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said AI’s risks may exceed its opportunities without safeguards and an ethical framework. She called for access to electricity and digital infrastructure, adequate regulation and involvement from countries with major AI sectors.
1. Safeguards and access
Georgieva said AI is already strengthening the global economy but could deliver negative shocks if major productivity gains do not arrive as quickly as hoped. She said people need access to digital infrastructure and electricity, as well as adequate regulation, to benefit from the technology.
2. Calls for standards
Georgieva backed industry self-regulation with input from society and key governments, including the US, China and India. Anthropic co-founder Jack Clark said AI standards should not be completely voluntary and called for “common sense standards.”
3. Economic uncertainties
Bundesbank President Joachim Nagel said AI could increase global imbalances because of the large investments required. Harvard economist Dani Rodrik said AI could bring job losses if productivity gains materialize, or a costly financial correction if heavy data-center investment fails to pay off.
