IMF's Georgieva urges member countries to act swiftly on debt, inflation
TLT•IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva urged member countries to respond quickly to rising inflation and reduce large deficits. She said AI investment, increased defense spending and the Middle East energy shock were fueling inflation and putting pressure on central banks to raise rates.
1. Call for swift action
Georgieva urged IMF member states to act swiftly if inflation rises and to work on reducing large deficits. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, she said stubborn inflation was fueled by AI investments.
2. Pressure on emerging markets
Georgieva said sharp increases in defense spending and the energy shock of the war in the Middle East were pushing inflation higher and putting pressure on central banks to raise interest rates. She said developing countries and emerging markets were “becoming victims of the increase in yields in advanced economies.”
