India seeks bigger share of diesel exports on refining capacity boom
INDA•India's diesel exports are set to surge from 2027 as state refiners add 16.5 million tons per year of diesel capacity. The country aims to raise refining capacity to 300 million tons per year by 2030, with a further increase to 400 million later.
1. Exports set to rise
India's diesel exports are set to surge from 2027 as state-run companies expand refining capacity, industry officials said. India was the world's second-largest exporter of seaborne diesel this year, behind the United States, ship-tracking data showed.
2. Refiners add capacity
State refiners plan to add 16.5 million tons per year of diesel production capacity by 2027. Indian Oil Corp aims to add about 18 million tons of annual refining capacity, including about 8 million tons of additional diesel output; Hindustan Petroleum Corp expects its new refinery to produce 3 million tons of diesel next year, and Bharat Petroleum Corp plans an additional 1.5 million tons.
3. India's refining plans
Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said India would refine for domestic use and the world. India is preparing to increase refining capacity to 300 million tons per year by 2030 and 400 million tons per year later. Officials said capacity growth could also free up volumes for export as some state refiners reduce purchases from other companies for local sales.
