Iran-linked diesel price spike makes electric trucks cheaper in key EU markets, group says
XLI•An analysis found electric trucks cheaper to own and operate than diesel models in six EU markets, which account for 46% of new heavy-truck registrations. Five-year savings for trucks bought in 2026 could reach €100,000 in the Netherlands, €85,000 in Germany and €69,000 in Denmark.
1. Electric truck savings
Electric trucks were already cheaper to operate than diesel models in the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France and Belgium, according to an analysis by Transport & Environment. The six markets account for 46% of EU heavy-truck registrations, and operators could recoup the initial purchase-price premium in about two years.
2. Chinese truck costs
The analysis estimated a Chinese-built electric truck costs about €210,000, compared with €265,000 for a European equivalent. In Germany, operators could save an additional €34,000 over five years by choosing a Chinese-made electric truck.
