Iran says it will reply to US response on Hormuz proposal once review is over
USO•Iran is reviewing a US response to its proposal on reopening the Strait of Hormuz and will reply through intermediaries when the review is complete, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said. Tehran says Washington’s response did not sufficiently address its seven conditions.
1. Review continues
Iran is reviewing a US response to its proposal regarding reopening the Strait of Hormuz and will reply to Washington through intermediaries once the review is over, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said. He said Iran continues to exchange messages through intermediaries, including Qatar and Pakistan.
2. Disagreements persist
Iran presented its proposal in mid-September after a June interim ceasefire crumbled and strikes resumed. Tehran says negotiations should initially focus on reopening the Strait and restoring security, while Washington insists on addressing Iran’s nuclear programme from the outset. Before the war, the waterway carried about a fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade.
3. Iran urges dialogue
Baghaei said Iran was open to helping resolve the escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthis through dialogue, and said Tehran would support an agreement reached by Yemenis and Saudis.
